   During the revolution of 1789, Sans-culottes was the name given at the time of the Convention (1792) to the revolutionaries who considered the culottes (knee-britches) worn by the former aristocracy as a sign of the ancien régime. As such, they wore instead long pants, as well as workers' smocks and the red bonnet of revolution. Formed in the districts of Paris, the Sans-culottes were led by the enragés (jacques roux) and then by the Hébertists and were responsible for the days of revolutionary uprising (May 31 and June 2, 1793) that led to the fall of the girondins and also the uprisings on September 4 and 5 of that year. it was generally because of pressure from the Sansculottes that the revolutionary government (the monagnard Convention) introduced various radical political (the terror), social, and economic measures.
